Die Geschichte der Menschheit ist durch vielfältige Kriege und Konflikte gekennzeichnet. Überall auf der Welt schwelen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Individuen, Gruppen, Völkern, Nationen. Einen Brennpunkt in Europa stellt in diesem Zusammenhang die Autonome Provinz Bozen resp. Südtirol als nördlichste Provinz Italiens dar, die im Zuge der Kriegswirren des ersten und zweiten Weltkriegs zum Spielball der Mächtigen und zur zerrissenen Zwischenwelt zwischen drei Nationen wurde. Nationalsozialismus und Faschismus trafen hier aufeinander, Hitler und Mussolini zerrten an ihren Grenzen, unzählige Schicksale wurden durch teuflische Hand zerstört. Heute leben in dieser Region deutsche und italienische Sprachgruppen in friedlicher Koexistenz, die Spuren der Vergangenheit sind aber noch immer allgegenwärtig. In meinem Projekt verbinde ich diese Relikte auf deutscher und italienischer Seite auf Basis der analogen Doppelbelichtung, indem ich Motive im Raum München und Bozen aufgreife und jeweils auf einem Bild verschmelze. Die Fotografien zeichnen die kollektive Vergangenheit der Bevölkerung in die Gegenwart fort und vergegenwärtigen die nach wie vor bestehenden, untrennbaren Verflechtungen. Sie sollen ein Mahnmal dafür sein, was menschlicher Terror zerstören kann, gleichzeitig aber einen Anknüpfungspunkt bilden für das heutige, positive Zusammenleben auf Basis gemeinsamer Wurzeln.
The history of mankind is characterized by a variety of wars and conflicts. Conflicts between individuals, groups, peoples and nations smoulder all over the world. A focal point in Europe in this context is the Autonomous Province of Bolzano / South Tyrol, Italy’s northernmost province, which became the plaything of the powerful and a torn world between three nations during the turmoil of the First and Second World Wars. National Socialism and Fascism clashed here, Hitler and Mussolini tore at its borders, countless destinies were destroyed by the devil’s hand. Today, German and Italian language groups live in peaceful coexistence in this region, but the traces of the past are still omnipresent. In my project, I connect these relics on the German and Italian sides on the basis of analog double exposure by taking motifs in the Munich and Bolzano area and merging them into a single image. The photographs trace the collective past of the population into the present and visualize the inseparable interdependencies that still exist. They are intended as a memorial to what human terror can destroy, while at the same time providing a starting point for today’s positive coexistence based on common roots.
